On Wednesday 27th February 2019, staff at our Marston Green setting decided to hold a Phonics Workshop. Parents were invited for an interactive phonics session with their children to experience how we learn phonics at nursery.
Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy. Staff at Little Scallywags use ‘Jolly Phonics’ – a comprehensive programme based on the fun and multi-sensory synthetic phonics method that gets children reading and writing from an early age. By introducing the early stages of this programme at nursery, it encourages children to develop the skills they need to hear sounds in words and match them to the corresponding visual representation.
Staff shared ideas and activities focussing on developing the children’s fine and gross motor skills, phonics knowledge and listening skills.
Staff plan for phonics everyday at nursery, this workshop enabled them to share their creative activities with parents, giving ideas on how phonics can be introduced at home.
There are plenty of parent workshops available for you to attend throughout the year- ask your nursery manager for an event timetable, or pick up a nursery newsletter to make sure you don’t miss any other exciting events!
